Substance User Engagement Services

Health and Healing

Outside In’s Substance User Engagement Services promotes health and healing for people who use drugs. This program is a place where everyone deserves respect and is a valued member of the community. We serve nearly 6,000 people each year, providing connection and education to support the health of people who are using drugs as well as overdose prevention training and naloxone distribution, screening for HIV, Hepatitis C, and syphilis, and referrals to healthcare and addiction services. In the last 5 years, we have had over 5,000 overdose reversal reports and made more than 2,600 referrals to treatment and health services.

This vital public health service greatly reduces the transmission of HIV and Hepatitis C and reduces overdose deaths.

In 1989, Outside In became the third agency in the U.S. to offer dedicated services for people using substances.

Today, Outside In’s Substance User Engagement Services continues to promote health and healing for people who are using drugs. This comprehensive program is guided by the belief that everyone deserves respect and is a valued member of the community. The team succeeds by building therapeutic relationships and delivering compassionate care to all of our participants.

This program supports more than 6,000 people annually. This vital public health service greatly reduces the transmission of HIV and Hepatitis C.

Naloxone, the antidote to opiate overdoses, is also provided to the people served at Outside In. To date, our dedicated team and its clients have reversed nearly 7,800 overdoses and saved lives.

Outside In’s Substance User Engagement Services provides on-demand HIV, Hepatitis C, and syphilis testing, as well as live drug checking services using mass spectrometry. Clients of this program also have easy access to Outside In’s clinic, which offers primary care, medically assisted treatment and substance use and behavioral health services.
