Board of Directors: Values Statement
The Board of Outside In is committed to the continued growth and support of the organization as a critical resource to the Portland metro area. We strive to provide strategic leadership and guidance in partnership with the Executive Director and Senior Management Team. The members of the board volunteer their time to provide stewardship for an organization that was founded to help young people with no access to physical and mental healthcare and has grown into an invaluable source of comprehensive health and wellness care for houseless youth and other marginalized communities.
Our service as board members is rooted in the following values:
- Partnership and community
- Hope, integrity, and compassion
- Respect for and belief in each individual’s potential for change and growth
- Hiring and retaining a diverse staff to better serve and reflect our clients and community
- A committed stance on issues of social justice and anti-racism
- Awareness of the effects of trauma and a commitment to the principles of trauma-aware care and leadership
We are always looking for board members with skills, expertise, and/or lived experience which complement and expand the board’s capabilities. At its best, a board of directors reflects the stakeholders and community where it works and serves. To accomplish this, we encourage applications from current and former Outside In clients and members of the communities that the organization serves.
Board service is a volunteer effort and does require a time commitment each month. In order to make that service more accessible, financial resources are available to help with expenses such as transportation costs, childcare, technology and others that may be incurred as part of serving as a member of the Outside In board.
Your unique experience is important and we welcome you to join us in guiding the organization’s future. For more information about joining the Outside In Board of Directors, contact firstname.lastname@example.org

Once submitted, applications are reviewed by Governance Committee, and candidates will be invited to meet with the Executive Director and Board President. Then a vote will be held by our full Board at our regular monthly meeting (every third Tuesday). Candidates will be informed of the result shortly after the meeting vote. If approved, an onboarding session will be scheduled for the new board member to occur prior to attending their first board meeting.
As a patient at Outside In, the dignity, compassion, and respect that I was shown by staff truly had a lasting impact on me and directly resulted in me wanting to get involved in helping my community.
Outside In made me want to be around excellence. Outside In shaped me. It taught me how to be kind to people less fortunate.
When I came out as trans and reached out to the community for help, everyone had something good to say about Outside In.
Through these connections I was able to get into school and graduate as a Certified Medical Assistant
Through Outside In’s guidance and support, I was in my own apartment completely self-sufficient within a week.
If you met me today, you might never imagine I spent countless nights sleeping under the Burnside Bridge.
Housing at Outside In is so much more than a roof over your head. The staff is helpful and amazing. They were always there for us anticipating our needs. Finally, we weren’t hungry anymore and we were safe.
I feel safe at Outside In. I love Outside In people. How they love us, care for us. The wonderful and fresh food, the health care, the accommodations, the hospitalities. People talking to me, listening to me. Changing lives. It is a great moment.
By the time I was 17, I didn't trust anybody...except Outside In. The staff took my concerns seriously, and took a holistic approach. They protected me.
